    This is one that needs to be added to the docs. In a nutshell, this allows you, the admin, to define external links to each story. An Index Name example would be "Homepage". Then, every story submitted has an optional field called Homepage. This allows you to also run a Freshmeat type application index, where each story can have multiple Index Names, such as Homepage, ChangeLog, Source. If this makes no sense, try adding something, and see what it does.
