Posted under General by mochaexpress on Wednesday February 14 2001 @ 04:29AM EST

could i get a show of hands as to who is using or is forced to use PHP 3.x? i need to know cause i'm about to use some functions that is only available on PHP 4.x when i add functions to phpweblog. on a side note, why are you still using PHP 3.x (just curious).

    Ok, here is a scenario...

I can use whatever I like on my own servers.

Many package are still released by say, RedHat in 3.x , I am in situations where I have to do things on a host that has, wait for it, 3.0.7 ! in one case, anyway, I also want to run PHPWeblog there, there is no way as somone on the outside I can mandate that my client or his ISP does an upgrade....

So my suggestion is this, work should always take into account both versions for some time yet, I am happy to help in CVS to have a current that works on PHP3, for future version additions, the ability to turn things on or off via a setting in the admin functions would be best, so I would say create modules etc that are easily turned on or off, that way both versions and future versions can be supported indefinately, this thinking should be applied now also to cover for say, a version PHP5, 6 etc etc.

A show of hand mau be better via a poll and mail list, a search of the site would also turn up some indicators, but how many would just give up?

I guess if you don't count bug fixes or security holes there is no reason to upgrade.. straight from the php.net site "Due to two security issues found in the Apache module version of PHP 4.0, PHP 4.0.4pl1 has been released. This bug-fix release also fixes a few party-crashing bugs that were discovered in PHP 4.0.4." theres an announcement like this for I'd say 60% of the new versions that go out...

Oh, further to this, it would also be worth having a switch or file extension specification, so say in common, file_ext="phpx" , then all files could be named accordingly, this overides those who may not be allowed .htaccess files, I have not looked close to see if the extension is referenced througout the code.

I only have access to PHP 3 on my hosting service. :(

ok i'll use php4 functions as a default but will check for php3 existence and use an equivalent home brew function for such cases.

    I applaud this move ;-)

I'm a very new user, but I think that is the correct solution. Most people that have a site available to the world don't own the server they are using. I know that my ISP is still using 3.0.12 and I don't know when they are going to move to 4. Thanks.
