Our experience with change from 0.4.1 to 0.5.0
Posted under General by (---.mcbone.net) on Sunday February 25 2001 @ 09:45AM EST
First of all thx to this (still) great piece of software. The point we have complaints only shows we are really working with it.

We had several problems when changing from 0.4.1 to the new stable 0.5.0. Let me put it into a list ....

First: Our links section was totally destroyed because of a DROP statement in the migration scripts on certain columns (I didnt work on that section so dont ask for details). The links were empty after migration. We managed to fix it by hand because we only had 75 links.

Second: StoryURL is dropped !!! in stories table which was pretty annoying. This is because of the new related link concept that extracts links from stories and displays them in an extra block. We had to do a little SQL Skript on our old DB and a Hack in the phpweblog scripts to get data and RELATED LINKS back in place. Hint: Change layouts.inc.php where you find "$link" to contain old version code like in 0.4.1. We still have to implement a textfield in the contribute section in order to add a link to a story.

Third: The new related link concepts forgets about one thing: Thumbnails in stories. On our site we use it pretty often. What happened is that phpweblog tries to show all the full pictures (800x600) in a small block. Although the new feature offers some convenience we had to comment it out (as far as I remember it was in block.inc.php)

Fourth: When you use topics in 0.4.1 the stories to moderate could be seen in the block e.g. TOPIC1 (20/1). Now we have to switch to admin mode in order to see if there's a new stories.

Fifth: Go here Another Phpweblog story

All in all a very time consuming migration for 0.5.0. But now you know what could go wrong. I didn't see a wanna-have-killer-feature in 0.5.0 so far, so my advice would be to stay on your last version for now. Anyway keep informed about this tool because its the BEST you can get for free ... and even the support is better than on many professional products I know.
