  • Question about »printer friendly« and »sharing«
Posted under General by Hilmar Jan on Tuesday May 01 2001 @ 04:54AM EDT
One of many smart features in phpWebLog is the possibility to choose »Printer friendly version« and »Share this story«.

But I would like to know if it is possible to integrate those two functions in the main block/in the story in stead of in a block on the side of the page.

This would look much more pretty and I would also like to know if this could be done with a »Printer friendly version«-image and »Share this story«-image (you know: a printer and an e-mail image).

I think I have seen some of this in some phpWebLog page, but can’t remember which page it was.

Can someone help me to solve this so I can get an even more nice looking page? ;-)

This is something that is planned for 0.6.0. I just need to find some images to use.

What if it is in pure text, just like in the block?

It shouldn’t be impossible to move the content of the »Printer friendly version«-image and »Share this story«-box and into the main page. Or is it?

As this is a function I’m very interested in, I would like to know if I really need to wait for version 0.6.0 to get it. Or is it somehow possible with the version 0.5.1pre6, that I’m using on my site?

The images are not so important as the possibility to move the functions from the block-box to the main.

No, not impossible. It's a matter of moving to code out of blocks.inc.php and into layout.inc.php. The F_drawSummary() and F_drawStory() functions will both use it to create a $printable and $mailfriend variable for use with the templates.

Hi! And thank you very much, Jason!

I know I’m begging, could you or somebody else tell me which code I have to move, because I REALLY want to move it.

I have seen it on some phpWebLog-site, so someone out there must have the key to help me out.

P.S. And I can imagine that other phpWebLog users would like to have the opportunity...

I think Mocha had done this on his version, which I plan to integrated after the 0.5.2 release.

So if "print page" and "email friend" get used as variables, should I drop them from the More Links block, and remove the two options to turn them on/off in the config?

I'd think that if they are template variables, then they should not be turned on/off. To enable/disable, you simply add or delete them from your template.

    Humm...

    Thanks!

I’m looking forward to it! And YES, I think it would be much better to remove the »print page« and »email friend« options from the More Links block and into the mainpage.

If you understand me: When you don’t know that the options are in the lefthand block, you can hardly find them...

And one more thing: I’m looking forward to the phpWebLog 0.5.2!

Will it be possible to update and still keep the same databases, themes etc.?

Yep. Upgrading to 0.5.2 consists of just one SQL query doing an INSERT to T_Config. That's it.

I remember I submitted a feature request with exactly this a couple of months ago, and Mocha actually put that in his unstable version at that time.

Agreed, the "more links" should be removed, in favor of the $printfriendly and $sendtofriend variables IN THE STORIES. (it makes much more sense usability wise too...)

Jason, glad the development is continuing in full swing... looking forward to 5.0.2... and 0.6.0 of course!! :)

Well! I haven’t tried 0.5.2 out yet, but I can see that this print/email feature isn’t in 0.5.2, but exists only on the todo list for 0.6.0.

My wish is that someone out there would do something about it to some of the pre’s to 0.5.2 – or to 0.5.3!

Especially that would be great because I’m totally satisfied with the 0.5.X versions of phpWebLog, and I can’t imagine that the print/email feature would disturb it.

    Therefore I quote: I have a dream...
