Templates should allow you to change more.. views: 251
    Development By Hercules (---.dyn.optonline.net) on Thursday June 21 2001 @ 05:02PM EDT [ Development ]
I think some blocks should be able to be more easily formatted. For example, the topics block shows everything with a bullet, though I wanted to use an image in place of the bullet. It's extremely difficult to sift through the code to do this.

Also, on the nav bar, I didn't notice a way to change the links on the top. It seems to be the same:
    "news index | search | archive | contribute news | links | polls | downloads | contact "

I think that after you can fix the formatting for this, the templates themselves could be easier to use. For example, instead of defining a block as 'left' or 'right, make a master template that is fully editable by Dreamweaver or any other similar software. You can simply put variable names in and phpWebLog can parse it. So if you put {{LeftBlock}}, it would simply pop the left block in that area instead of defining it. And other template files would allow you to edit the block themselves.

This is a great message, and needs to be addressed for discussion. I'll probably be reposting this when the templates get streamlined. Thanks for your input.

I think you are right about this Hercules. Templates should be able to change anything that seems to be changed by people anywhere in the script.
Like any form of imagefile or navigationbar and stuff.

I agree. Currently for every item (block, story, comment) the template file for that item must be loaded. This causes many trips back to the file system to create each part of the web page. I think that it would be better if we only loaded a single file once that defined the templates for use in creating the page.

BTW - it's not that difficult to replace the list bullets with images. I did it on my site by using search/replace on all phpWebLog files. Just made it look for
  • and
  • , having it replace those with and . Pretty simple.

Its not that hard to come up with something that doesn't look much like phpweblog with a bit of tweaking.... http://www.keepitretro.com for example. running 0.5.2....
