How can I see the stats of the links followed?

If you turn on Views in the config, it should show you the number of hits by each link. The number is stored in a field called Hits in the T_Links table in the database.

Set chmod permissions correct for /logs/ files. You should set them at 777.

I had this same problem when I updated my .xlay from the Admin section - specifically the 'slogan' - it seems phpweblog didn't insert the xlay name into T_Config as the cell was blank when I checked manually...
